Punta Arenas, II

There was a boat to Porvenir at 4 so there was time to see the city. I ate the famous choriqueso with the leche con platano and ate pastries with manjar. Carlos was intrigued by the choriqueso and I returned with him and he ate the churiqueso and I drank another leche con platano. Carlos and I rode along the shore to arrive at the boat with plenty of time. Yet on the way, Carlos´s stem snapped. It was good luck: it could have been on an descent, it could have been in the wind, it could have been on the ripio, it could have been in a desolate area. But we were in Punta Arenas, just a kilometer from the boat, and it was clear a new stem was in order. But to return to the center we needed to somehow stabilize the stem. We were near the zona franca area, so we went in search for a bicicliteria. We found a bicicliteria for a department store with three workers who specialized in assembling children´s bikes, and we pulled out the stem from the headset and chiseled the broken stem loose, then used a bmx stem to stabilize the bike for the ride back to the center. We will miss the boat tomorrow but will be able to get Carlos a new stem and ride on.
